Can Aglime Help Reduce Soil Acidification?

Aglime is a compound that can significantly benefit soil and consequently plant production. Aglime, when used with fertilizers, helps to increase soil productivity by increasing the availability of necessary nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur, which get depleted through soil acidification. It also raises the pH of the soil as it is a basic substance and therefore reduces soil acidity, negating some of the harmful environmental effects. When aglime is used in plant production, it leads to better yields and better crops. For example, a study conducted by The University of Wisconsin found that when aglime was used when growing alfalfa, the quality and yield of the alfalfa were improved due to the aglime providing the necessary nutrients and proteins and increasing the pH. For every 0.1 increase in pH, productivity correspondingly increased by 0.125 tons per acre. These findings also were supported by tests using corn and soybeans. This increase in agricultural productivity can have important economic and environmental implications.
